Cat Behavior

Cats can be nice pets to have, but how they act around other cats or their owner can be quite a mystery, unless you can figure out what they might be trying to tell you. Cats can communicate with their owner mostly by meows, but they also can communicate through body language, such as the position of their tail. However, figuring out what they are trying to say can be a bit of a challenge, especially if you just got the cat recently.

Some cats make noises, such as meows, to communicate. Scientists have found out that meowing is exclusive to communication with humans, while other noises such as growling is used among other cats. When a kitten meows, it is normally to tell its mom that it needs food or water. But as it grows up, it meows less for its mom and more for its owner, so that it can tell the owner that it needs food or water. It might also meow because it might just simply want to talk, or it might be hurt. If you think the cat is hurt, it would be best to take it to a vet.

Cats might also hiss, which signify that it feels threatened or disturbed. Common causes of a hiss might be someone pulling or stepping on their tail, or if they step on or near them.

Cats also purr, which most people find comforting. Cats purr when they are given attention, or if they are nervous. If you have taken a cat to a vet before, you might have heard them purr in nervousness when they were in the car or at the vet’s office. Scientific research shows that cat owners are less likely to have heart attacks, and it is thought to be because of the cat’s purring. Cats are very unique animals, but if you understand how they communicate, you can understand them and even meow back at them to “talk” with them.

  1. We have 3 cats and it’s amazing how they each have such unique personalities and even how their meows are all so different. I didn’t know a cat purred when they’re nervous. Interesting.
