Service is the action of helping someone. We give a whole school day called Serve-A-Thon to serving others in the community. Kindergarten through 12th grade go out to neighbors, churches, shelters, and people in need to serve in any way we can.
11th grade went to the Hope Rescue Center in Reading. We learned all about what they do there, which includes giving homeless men in Reading a place to sleep, wash their clothing, eat meals and serve. We worked in their gardens pulling weeds and getting it ready for them to plant veggies. Around lunch time, we served pizzas, salad, apple pie, drinks, and donuts to the men of the house. We got to talk to them and serve them as they were eating. After lunch, we went back to the gardens to pull more weeds while half of the class went to the Hope Store to paint a fence white. This fence will be repainted into a beautiful mural so that everyone who walks by can see it.
10th grade went to a park in Reading to clean up trash. In the afternoon, they went to an elementary school to read to some 1st graders. Esther Wild said, “I learned that sometimes I close my eyes to all the bad stuff that goes on. Going to the park to serve and seeing all kinds of bad stuff, made me think about it. I realized I should reach out more and help those who are in need.” She also said she really enjoyed Serve-A-Thon because she can really get to bond with her class.
9th grade went into the townhouses in Reading to give out flyers for Bethany Church in Reading. Alicia Fick said she enjoyed going around and spreading the Lord to each household. 8th grade painted rooms at a church in Birdsboro. After they were done painting, they went to Monocacy Elementary School to read to 1st graders and play with them. Kristin said she very much enjoyed spending this day with her class.
This day reminds us that being served and serving others is very important to do. I do not think we realize how important and how much it is needed in this world today. People will always need help even if they do not want to admit it. Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many”. It is good to serve others through our Christian faith.
