The Future of the NBA

The NBA is the highest level of professional basketball in the world, and the league is always trying to find young and exciting talent. Ben Simmons is one of these talents. He is currently the starting point guard for the Philadelphia 76ers and was drafted no.1 overall in the 2016 NBA draft. He plays a good role in Philly with his defense and his willingness to attack the basket.

Simmons has taken the NBA by storm and has proven himself this season. His 6ft 10in frame and 7ft wingspan really clogs passing lanes and is ideal for blocking shots. The 76ers have played 13 games so far, and he is averaging 17.8 points without an effective jump shot. Most people are concerned about his lack of shooting skills. But that does not matter for the Sixers because of players like JJ Redick and TJ McConnell who can fill the shooting role.

Simmons has an incredible ability to create shots, and he is almost unstoppable on fast breaks. Many people have already said that he is the future of the NBA for a few reasons. He has already proven to be dominant and extremely athletic. Players have already learned to play off him by about 5 feet. They never  seem to be ready for him to dart towards the basket with his incredible speed and acceleration. When Ben is on the fastbreak, he has an amazing percentage of scoring. He is second in the league only to  Lebron James. He has also become the only rookie to have two triple doubles in their first nine games since Oscar Robertson in 1961.

Some people say that he is one of a kind because of his height and basketball I.Q. But the idea of having a near 7 foot player at point guard is not a brand new idea. He is showing a close resemblance to the three time MVP winner and five time championship winner, Magic Johnson. The “showtime” Los Angeles Lakers had Johnson, who was one of the first tall point guards at 6 feet 9 inches tall, use his height advantage. This made him more dominant to the other smaller point guards in the league. Another player currently in the NBA, Giannis Antetokounmpo has also been recognized for his height and ability to handle the ball.

When watching Ben Simmons play at LSU, Magic Johnson said that he was the best all-around player that he saw since Lebron James. Even Lebron James himself said that he was going to be an amazing talent in the NBA. Ben Simmons has been playing above expectations, and he himself has said that he should be playing better. That is an attitude that you want out of a young player. Luc Longley, a former center for the Bulls and three time NBA champion, says that Ben Simmons has a bright future and could reach Michael Jordan level. Trust the Process.
